I choose a dark and moody shoot for Mami and I think it worked out well, although we did some stuff in the daylight in Malibu for the fun of it. She was energetic and fun to work with but when it came time to shoot she knew what do to, which is surprising for new models. As you will see we did low light indoors and outdoors just to really push the limits of what we can get.
Shooting in low light without a tripod can cause a lot of focus and slight camera or subject movement errors. I experienced these issues with the Canon 5D but tried to deal with them at times unsuccessfully. The Nikon D3 has given me the assurance I need in low light by providing better focusing and a much higher frame rate while maintaining the FX (full 35mm frame) advantage for my style of shooting. Shots that would have been lost with just about any other digital camera are achievable now with the Nikon D3. I also enjoyed using the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mmf/2.8G ED, it is pin sharp wide open which is a surprise given the results of the previous version. I just hope Nikon realizes that not everyone can get their hands on a overpriced AF Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D (like I did when it was out and not overpriced), and releases a new version for us low light and hand held lovers. It should not be impossible to produce a version of the 28mm 1.4 with AF-S and VR. Anyway the D3 is quite a dream to use and finally there are no excuses for us low light people in terms of camera bodies.
This gallery name come for the old saying "Oh Mama Mia," and sort of a take on the ABBA hit song and musical "Mamma Mia!" Yes I listened to a lot of ABBA growing up, ABBA gold was one of my favorite CDs.

Its double feature time this month, I am presenting 2 galleries of images, one in my galleries section and another in my models section. The first set of images is called Back to the Tokyo but for clarity I will call it Anigao, which means Anime Face Gal after the models character. The second gallery I will call "Back to the Tokyo Part 2" which includes images in the Tokyo and Hiroshima areas of japan.
I have narrowed my gallery to 50 images, I may just release another few images in a few months that did not make the cut sort of "not best of" because I had to cut a lot of images that may have been interesting to certain viewers. I choose images based on variety and interest, I gave some a unique handling that takes me back in time. I am certain that there is something in this gallery for everyone; I really hope you enjoy it. I trekked near and far, day and mostly night in the cites of Tokyo, Nikko and Hiroshima to try to add as much variety as I had ever done before, and to touch on subjects I had not graced.
Many may wonder about my model Anigao, its a rather interesting service offered in Tokyo's Akihabra district. She's a great actress and was completely in Anime character during the entire shoot, she does not talk but writes things down on a small dry erase board. She "texted" me that I was the first non-Japanese to take her photo, hopefully in the year 2030 I will be in Japan to do the first model shoot with a real looking and acting robot model.
I would also like to note that the Camdapter grips that I used on this trip were pretty much flawless. Tokyo was hot as heck and I had one camera on my hand most of the time and the Camdapter's made it much less of a taxing experience.
The name of these galleries comes from the fantastic adventure series Back to the Future. I chose this name due to the fact that I have been to Japan two times this year and traveling to Tokyo is like going to the future in many aspects.
My other galleries taken in Japan are Joshua Dearing's Tokyo Drifting Motif, Joshua Dearing's Tokyo Drifting People, Joshua Dearing's Tokyo Drifting Places, Joshua Dearing's Tokyo Drifting Things and Joshua in Japan
As the old adage the third time is the charm may pertain to attempts, I feel that I must have a double charm in my 6th shoot with Debbie King. The last shoot I did with Debbie earlier this year was about half during daytime and half during night, this shoot was a complete night shoot. I am sure you will enjoy these photos as much as enjoyed taking them.
On a note unrelated to this gallery, I just got back from 26 days in Japan. So there should be some form of gallery coming within the next month or so. I'm not sure if I am going to do as I did in the past and post several large galleries or just post a few select galleries as time goes on. I have some very interesting images to present and I will work on the best way to communicate them to the audience.
The title of this gallery comes from the terrific Will Smith movie Six Degrees of Separation. I feel it was his best movie in terms of acting and writing.
My five other galleries of Debbie King are The Return of the King, Debbie Does Downtown, Debbie King Queen of LA, Debbie King Downtown Los Angeles and Debbie King Fall 2004.
Helen Lampe (Dearing) passed away this past April, after only suffering a few weeks with cancer that had been unknown to her or anyone else. She was the best possible grandmother I could ever imagine. I talked to her on a weekly basis, and like she said "Its almost like a visit, its like you are right here." She was a tremendous influence on my life for those 32 years she was with me, and I would not have been able to have the experiences I have had without her. My sister and I would visit her many times a week and we completely enjoyed it. I can not imagine a life without her and her somewhat tough opinion. She was 92 years old when she passed away, and I love her more than everything. She is and was considered by my sister and I as our 3rd parent.
Her camera used to have a timestamp, so I payed homage to her and included a timestamp in a few recent photos I took of which are included in this gallery.
The name of the gallery "For Mice," is from what she used to write on the back of some of her photos. The first time I remember seeing it I mentioned it to my mother because I was confused by it. My mom said that she means that if I keep her photos where mice can see it then her photo will scare them away. This was quite the contrary for me, I loved seeing her. She had a special warmth that I believe that only her closest friends could see.
Beautiful and bright Bonny is all you need for a great small photoshoot. While not as elaborate as the "Shau Na Na" gallery I am pleased with the images we got in the few hours we pounded the Downtown Los Angeles pavement. It was particularly dark in Chinatown but we tried to use the little light we could find to create some images with appeal.
In weekly news, I was excited to hear that Nikon has released a 35mm "Full Frame" or as Nikon calls it a FX sensor size camera. The new Nikon D3 should surpass (or at least equal) the Canon equivalents I have been using for low light work, especially since the newly announced Canon 1Ds Mark III maxes out at ISO 3200 (most recent cameras have ISO 6400). If Canon does indeed increase the sensor density of the next 5D and makes it a much more robust camera while at least pushing the max ISO up to 6400 then we have a battle on our hands for low light non flash non tripod photography. So far it seems Nikon has already won this upcoming battle on paper at least. I don't mind my camera starting at ISO 200 as long as its as clean as ISO 100.
The Movie Bonny and Clyde is the name this gallery borrows and alters its name from. The movie is based on the trus story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.
Lemme let you know something about Shauna, shes a tennis player and now a model. In my book if someone loves tennis and photography they can be my friend for life! We compiled a few images for quite a wide variety of looks, I know that this is equal to my best work and I dip into a few styles that I will explore in the future.
This is the first shoot that I used my new Camdapter Hand Strap System on my camera's. It is a joy to use after practically searching the world for the perfect comfortable and secure hand strap system. If you are a hand strap sort of person I highly suggest it over the Nikon and Canon offerings (I know because I tried them all).
This months title Shau Na Na is a play on the great comic band act Sha Na Na. I just could not resist to name it after them it just flows off the tongue so well. I would suggest you to get a copy of some of their work, they are hilarious. Keep your hats on, even more to come later this month :)
Grab a hold of your bullwhip and welcome my new friend Judy Tom to the pages of dEaringfilm. It was a short and great shoot, when I say short I mean the total shoot time was less than a hour and the drinking and fun events were a lot longer than that. In the moonlight we were able to produce a great little gallery that pushed the ISO values of the camera beyond normal sanity levels. Expect to see more of Judy sooner rather than later, shes a real doll to work with. No not that "Real Doll," hehe! The kind of Real Doll you would hear from the lips of Frank Sinatra.
When Judy Tom dawned a Fedora from her bag I knew my theme for this gallery. Indiana Jones would give his life to save his trusty sun swatter so I know I had to pay homage to the Fedora loving hero himself. Its nice to know we will see him on the silver screen again soon in 2008 for the fourth movie. I can't think of any better movie theme song, I know a lot come close second but it has to be the most invigorating. I think Star Wars and Rocky are a very close second.
Why the "Early August 2007" date? Well more to come later this month!
This month I venture into the depths of the Solar System to the moon of Jupiter called Io. Ok I am pulling your leg :) I just ventured around Los Angeles shooting a girl named Io. I wonder if she is the daughter of Inachus? I think we have all had enough of my silly name play by now :)... hey I hope you are still reading! I shot this gallery in several different historic Los Angeles locations including the newly reopened Griffith Observatory. Which incidentally was used quite a bit in the new Transformers movie. I think I captured the essence of Io in this gallery especially compared to the last one, this has quite a bit of variety and color with several themes being explored in a single gallery.
The name of this galley comes from the great over a century old French film Le Voyage dans la lune. So this galleries alternative name could be something like A Trip to Jupiter's Moon, or A Trip to Io. I really think its great that anyone can watch this great old movie for free here.
LA looks different from every angle of every degree. If you happen to be a LA local have you ever noticed how a movie can make the Los Angeles downtown look very big and very populated? Its not small but its nearly a ghost town on the weekends and has virtually no shopping. These are the things I love about it specifically, its open to do with it what you want.... some call it a Hollywood backlot and others are scared to go there. I did quite a bit of my cartography late a night downtown Los Angeles in the amazingly cool 2nd street tunnel and used the office lights of the downtown buildings to my advantage. I have to admit I am a whore for the 2nd street tunnel, from its use in Blade Runner to my commute through it every day I never get tired of its out of place futuristic broken down look. I also have photos from the West LA hangout of Little Osaka or sometimes known as Sawtelle and Olympic, and Little Ethiopia near the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles.
This is my first gallery with cartography, I have attempted to make decent and unique photos from a moving car. I use a monopod to hold up my camera while using a nearly shut sunroof to keep it in position, and of course a remote release for the shutter. The trick is to vary your car's speed and your camera's exposure time but drive as strait as you can. Who knows where I will take this but I have enjoyed the results so far.
Debbie likes it, what more can I say. The Debbie King and Joshua Dearing photo team have produced their finest results yet. For the 5th time I have tried to show how stunning Debbie is, which really turns out to be simple. I have a theory, model photography is 75% the model and 25% the photographer (if they are the only two involved). So if you get yourself great models then you at least get a passing grade :) Soon after Debbie saw the photos I got some gleeful text messages from her, its always nice to see a model happy about the results.
My inspiration comes from many places, I can't always pin it down to one exact person or place or song or heck even smell. I am inspired to make great night model photography simply because the modern digital camera's are finally at the point where I can hand hold them at high ISO and get spectacular results. Particularly in this gallery with Debbie because I did not use a tripod or any flash or special lighting... we used what the moon and Los Angeles public street lighting gave us. Night is so much more magical an in my opinion more beautiful for photography than daytime is. Pretty soon I will be showing a new gallery of night "cartography," it will be my champagne breaking on the new ship sort of deal. In the meantime I hope to do more model photography when moon is brighter than the sun.
This Model Gallery borrows its name from the third and final installment of the Lord of the Ring's trilogy "The Return of the King." I took some great pleasure watching that series of movies but they clearly lack the sexiness of Debbie King. Debbie is sexi, sexi, sexi; how can a series of movies compete with that? When we were doing the night shoot with Canon's great EF 35mm f/1.4L USM and EF 50mm f/1.4 USM I was thinking "Two lenses to rule them all."
Pounding the pavement in the city that truly never sleeps is a pastime of mine. The big lights, the construction that never stops and hints of old Japan continue to keep my interest. The natural beauty and the beauty of the people especially in inner city Tokyo are very stimulating for a young foreign man; there is always something wonderful to look at and to look back at you. When you spend a lot of time in Japan you kind of figure out who you are, I know I am a true Akiba-kei, or maybe a subset of that called photo otaku? Who really knows, but I hope to head back to Tokyo the end of this coming summer to capture just as much as I was able to get this time.
This Gallery features photos I took in the city of Tokyo in January, along with Kamakura, Osaka, Kyoto among others. I spent most of my time in Shibuya, walking around night and day. I was able to capture quite a few night scenes with my camera hand held which I could not do in previous years because I would have lost a lot of detail with my beloved Nikon bodies in low light situations. These photos were captured with a Nikon D200 and Canon 5D, and an assortment of prime and zoom lenses from both manufacturers.
For me this photographic journey was great because I revisited some of my favorite areas in Tokyo like Asakusa's Unko Bulding, which marvels me, and visited a few old friends like Kamkura's Daibutsu and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Thank you for taking the time to check this gallery out; there is a lot of love and care that went into it.
Tokyo Drifting is a play off of the 1966 Japanese movie by Seijun Suzuki called Tokyo Drifter in English and Tokyo Nagaremono in Japanese. Its a colorfull and dark Yakuza movie that I used for the theme of my photos. I also used a color look from Kon Ichikawa's movie Ototo. Movies tend to be the influence of a lot of my photos and will continue to be. Although the new movie The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was a "decent" movie it has nothing to do with my theme. I did like Sung Kang in it, he gave his usual great "Han" role ;)
Welcome to 2007, we decided to start the year out how I wanted to, with our first new Sarah Kim Gallery since mid 2005. She is looking better than ever and making it easy for me, what a great friend. So step right up and enjoy the new year.. dEaringfilm style.
This was my second trip to the salton sea in a month, I can't get enough of this wonderful place, check out Northshore and Bombay Beach if you go there.
Midori Tababta is the kind of fun spririted person I like to photograph. We shoot talk about life and shoot some more, I tried to capture her spirit in the photos I am presenting, only she and her friends know if I Aced it. The images were taken with the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom and the Nikon 28mm f/1.4D AF which is now sadly discontinued and the ebay prices are going crazy for it.
The Salton sea is a must visit for Southern California people, within a few hours drive you go to a place that seems like another world. This series is a step up in evolution of my photography.
Linda Li is a first time model but this woman is first class all the way. I shot her in the artist district in downtown Los Angeles and little Tokyo along with the beautiful beach at Point Dume in Malibu. Please check the EXIF data which is embedded into the files for lenses used.
As summer closes down I have one last ditch effort to bring that summer smile back to your face. Cheryl has show up in tip top shape for her summer encore and Redondo Beach sure was happy to see her. On the sunset shots I used Nikon's SB-800 AF Speedlight. Check the EXIF data for lenses used.
Working with Yuka is a blast as usual. We shot in the Artist District and in Torrance near Mitsuwa market. Which in the old days was called Yaohan, which so happens to be the first place I ever went to with japanese culture in Chicago, Illinois back in 1993... ahh the goood old days. Anyway the Yaohan shut down in Japan so the emplyees of the america store bought the Yaohan stires and renamed them Mitsuwa (not to be mixed up with Marukai).
Sharleen is a sweetheart that is as happy off of the camera as she is on it. Her beautiful smile was easy to shoot on the calm sunny day we had. Look for a few Motifs I have done over the past few shoots.. I am playing around with some ideas.
I enjoy going to the the Annual Bridge USA Natsu Matsuri even in Torrance, California every year. This year I concentrated on shooting the young performers, its nice to see hopeful spirits.
From time to time I like to edit some misc photos that I did not use on the site for various reasons. Here are a few photos that I did not use or used and was not happy with the final result at that time.
I was recently in Iowa and Missouri, on that trip I shot a few events and a few photos for myself. I especially like the dogs my parents and sister have, ala "Tails."
This month I have taken a few hours to sit down and watch and review the Ron Reznick SureShot System for Digital Photography DVD set. I was pretty excited to see what Ron had come up with and to tell you the truth it was all that I hoped it would be.
Cheryl Mak is hotter than Snakes on a Plane, and she truly does fly with the star and stripes in her modeling debut. This shoot was technically 2 days from different locations in the LA Metroplex. I used a variety of camera's and lenses too many to list really, if you check out the EXIF data on the photos it will give you all the information you will need. We shot in Malibu, UCLA, Park La Brea, Downtown in Little Tokyo and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Melrose and Sherry were ready for this but was I? Fortunately I was this time and we got a great shoot out of it. Sherry has been improving each time I see her, that is something you cannot say about everyone, so obviously this is crap compared to what we will get next time, hehe. We used the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and the 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor for this shoot.
Debbie King does a tour of the Los Angeles Downtown hot spots, Little Tokyo and Chinatown. I did this shoot with a GPS connection to the camera's for most of the shoot. I hope to have google links up soon for the GPS data, so check back. From now one all camera data (EXIF) will be attached to my photos, this is a practice that I have not used in the past. I think this kind of data is important and especially because google will probably dig for this data in the near future. I shot with the following lenses the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and the 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor and finally the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom.
Yuka Yamaguchi does her first photo shoot at the beautiful campus at University of California, Los Angeles in Westwood, California. Yuka and I have been talking about a shoot for years and it finally happened. I shot with the D2Hs and I think I found Nikon's perfect hand held modeling camera, beautiful colors, ease of use and very few focus errors. I mounted the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and the 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor and finally the 200mm f/2G ED-IF AF-S VR Nikkor on the D2Hs.

| Io from northern Japan the city of Akita, but there is nothing cold about this beautiful young girl. For the first time I shot the entire shoot with the newcomer to the Nikon family the D200. I am very surprised with its crystal clean ISO 100 and build quality. At times I think it is much better for model photography than the D2X is.. then again I really loved the D2h(s) for this type of work. I primarily used the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom lens and the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lenses. If I don't say so myself these two lenses are quite a nice model combo. I did this model shoot in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles Downtown. |

I worked with Lisa Duong who is a aspiring model and pageant queen. We shot 2 shoots one in the Chinese/Asian populated area of Monterey Park and the other in Malibu, Ca Point Dume, a favorite location of mine. I shot the shoot with the new 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor, and the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lens. related links outside dEaringfilm: alhambra, california, malibu, california, camera i used nikon d200 |

Up and coming model/friend of mine Sherry Wu is always a blast to work with. We did a pretty simple short shoot at Walt Disney Concert hall and a parking lot in Little Tokyo Los Angeles. You will see a lot more of Sherry in the LA modeling scene for sure, I know she has been shooting like crazy even ever since I shot her, so congrats to her. I shot her with the the D2x and the new D200. I shot her with the Nikkor 85mm 1.4, and the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom lenses. related links outside dEaringfilm: walt disney concert hall, little tokyo, los angeles, california, cameras i used nikon d2x and D200 |

Mountain Trip To Japan 2005-2006 Its that time of year again, the one where I head to the jewel of the orient. Most of the outsiders call this place Japan but its really Nippon. I will like in years past publish my photos from this mid winter classic but this time I really wanted to document my gear and planning and then after let you know what worked and what did not work. I will be visiting among others the cities of Kamakura, Kyoto, Tokyo, Sapporo and Hokkodate. My goal is to obtain as many high quality and interesting photos as humanly possible, along with obscure themes and photos with lots of Nouns in them for a side project I am working on. more... |

| Vanessa Garcia and I did a very short shoot to warm the winter skies on the pacific coast. One thing we learned is that cell phones do not work at all at Pepperdine University in Malibu, so don't ever go there expecting them to work ... hehe. I can't say this too much I guess but it was great working with this real pro, she makes things very easy on me. I shot her with the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom lens and the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lens. We also took a few of the photos at point dume also in Malibu. |

| This month I am presenting part two of the recent Sarah Kim shoot, this one was done on location at Zuma Beach in Malibu. This has to be my favorite beach shoot so far, not only because I think I got my best results yet but the company was marvelous. Again thank you to Nancy for making my photos look great and making Sarah really shine. During this part of the shoot I just used the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor and the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lenses. I really don't need to blab on about these women and lenses the results can speak for themselves. |

| What a wonderful photo shoot, first and foremost I have to give a special thank you to Nancy for helping us out. This turned out to be a two part shoot with me showing the first part this month and next month I will show the bikini/beach gallery. Sarah is a very special model and we had loads of fun, it is so easy making her look good. I shot with the Nikon D2x camera and a few choice lenses like the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor, the 28mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor and the Nikkor 85mm 1.4. This entire half of the shoot was done on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. |

| Debbie King provides us with royalty this month, with a gallery containing exquisite quality and the essence of the King herself. One user protected swimsuit photo and one open access standard gallery. It goes without saying I used my Nikkor 85mm 1.4, but I did use the jack of all trades 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor... wow, that is a super long name! We did the swimsuit shoot at point dume in malibu and the standard shoot at the campus at UCLA in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. |

| I have added 2 new galleries to the gallery section of the site. the first of which was a event in Torrance, California at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center which is commonly known as the Japanese Summer Festival but officially titled the Annual Bridge USA Natsu Matsuri. Check out the next issue of "Bridge USA" Magazine for at least 1 of my photos in there from this event. I also have added a gallery from the Renaissance Faire or commonly known as Ren Faire, about half of the shots are of wildlife from the area that the faire was held this year. |

| Vanessa Garcia returns, and she happends to be one of my favorite models to work with. You can easily see that this shoot is light years ahead of the last one. I used the new Nikon D2x for most of this shoot along with the standard Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and Nikkor 28mm 1.4. We did the entire shoot downtown Los Angeles in Chinatown, Little Tokyo and the Disney Concert Hall. |

The cute and sexy Stacey Lam makes her appearance on dEaringfilm. Ever notice the name of this site has nothing to do with the way I actually take photos? Well dEaringdigital just has no flow... hehe. We did the shoot at Malibu and the Disney Concert Hall. I used my regular Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lens and the Nikon Nikon D2x. related links outside dEaringfilm: walt disney concert hall, malibu, california, camera i used nikon d2x |

| Sarah Kim is great to work with and acts like a pro in her first model shoot. I think you will see why she makes the perfect model for dEaringfilm, she oozes with beauty. We did the photo shoot at Point Dume in Malibu and Santa Monica college in Santa Monica. I shot her mostly with the Nikkor 85mm 1.4, but at times I popped on the new great little lens the "Lensbaby" and the Nikkor 12-24 AF-S F4 DX, and a few of the face shots were done with the classic E Series Nikon lens the 75-150 F3.5. |

| Debbie King is back again this time we went to another beautiful architectural spot in LA, the Disney Concert Hall. We also stopped by chinatown later in the shoot to get a few more colors. I mostly used the Nikkor 85mm 1.4, and popped on the Nikkor 28mm 1.4 when the light got way too low. I think the results were pretty acceptable for a 2nd shoot. |

| I photographed the young Akko at one of my favorite spots the Redondo Beach Pier surrounding area. It was a fun time, I think she did a great job for her first time modeling. She hails all the way from the beautiful city Matsudo in Chiba Japan. I mainly used the classic Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lens. related links outside dEaringfilm: The Redondo Beach Pier, camera i used nikon d2h |
What a wonderful model to work with I thought while doing the shoot with Vanessa, she is a lot of fun to work with, I think the best shots came soon after a good laugh. I did this shoot with the D70 and the D2h, with the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.8 lenses, I also used the 17-35mm 2.8 for some ultra weird close ups. related links outside dEaringfilm: camera i used nikon d2h and nikon d70 |
